My key shell is cracking around the key ring area. Can you swap the shell without reprogramming anything?

Yes, and it's one of the more common calls I get on G37 fobs. The shell on these cracks at two spots: the key ring bridge at the top, and the seam around the emergency blade housing. Both are stress points from daily carry.

The fix is a shell transfer. The original circuit board moves from your cracked housing into a new one, the emergency blade gets cut fresh, and nothing electronic gets touched. No reprogramming, no pairing, no dealer visit. As long as the board comes out clean, which it usually does, your fob works exactly the same as before. Just looks and feels new again.

What exactly is a smart key and why does my G37 need programming just to start?

The Intelligent Key fob your G37 uses does two separate jobs. First, it's a remote entry device for lock and unlock. Second, and this is the part that matters for starting, it communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer system when you push the start button. The car is looking for a specific paired signal from your fob. If it doesn't find one it recognizes, the engine won't turn over regardless of anything else.

That pairing is written during a programming procedure through the diagnostic port. A fob you buy online is blank. The right part number gets you hardware that can be programmed, but the programming itself is what ties it to your specific car. That's why cutting a blade isn't the whole job on a push-button car like this.

My G37 is showing a key-not-detected warning. Where do I start?

Start with the CR2032. A low battery is the most common cause and it doesn't always kill the fob cleanly. Sometimes you just get a warning on the dash, sometimes range gets short, sometimes it reads fine one minute and fails the next.

If a fresh battery doesn't clear it, try this: hold the fob body directly against the start button and press with your foot on the brake. There's an antenna built into the button housing that can read the fob at close range even with a weak or dead battery. A lot of owners don't know that's there.

If neither of those works, the fob may have lost its pairing. This can happen after a completely drained vehicle battery in some cases. At that point you need someone with the right diagnostic tool to re-register the fob to the car. It's not a long job, but it's not something the car can walk you through on its own.

I bought a replacement fob online for my G37. Can you just program it, or is there a catch?

Bring it and I'll check it. The catch is that not every fob sold online as a G37 replacement actually matches. The factory FCC ID on the back of your original fob is what you want to match exactly. Wrong FCC ID usually means the frequency or internal configuration is different, and it won't pair no matter how good the programming equipment is.

If the part number and FCC ID on the replacement match your original, programming it is a normal job. If they don't match, you're better off sourcing the right one before paying for a service call.

Can my G37 be programmed if both keys are lost?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a G37 is a standard job. The process wipes the car's registered key memory and enrolls new fobs fresh from zero. Any lost fobs become useless for starting the car after that, which is what you want.

It takes longer than adding a key to an existing working key, because the reset sequence has a timed step built into the security system. Plan on the job running a bit longer than a standard add-a-key appointment. I do it on-site in Sunset Hills, no tow to a dealer required.
