Near The Oaks Mall Area in Thousand Oaks, a guy called me on a Tuesday afternoon. He was parked in the lot, done with his shopping, and the car just sat there. Push the button, nothing. Dash lit up with a key-not-detected warning. He had his one and only fob in his hand, so it wasn't a range issue.

Still wouldn't start normally. The button start hesitation was gone, but the car hadn't re-established the handshake cleanly. I had him hold the fob flat against the start button and try. It fired right up.
We tested every button, ran the door handle touch unlock on both front doors, locked and unlocked from a distance across the parking lane. Everything came back to life.
He mentioned a dealer visit earlier in the year where they told him the intelligent key unit might need replacing. That quote had stuck in his head. He was relieved to leave with the original fob working and a spare key programmed before I packed up, because one key is never the right number to have.
