A guy in Victoria Estates reached out after buying a used 2016 Lexus RC from a private seller over in Oxnard. Clean coupe, decent price, one key. The seller told him to sort out a spare on his own, which he figured was fine until he called the dealer.
The number they quoted him stopped him cold. He sent me a message asking if dealers really charge that much for a spare smart key. I told him yes, that's a real dealer number, but it's not the number you have to pay.
I met him at his place in Victoria Estates. The job was an add-a-key: he had one working fob, so there was no full system reset involved, no all-keys-lost procedure. I connected to the OBD port, pulled up the immobilizer system, and registered a second fob to the vehicle alongside the original. Cut the emergency insert blade to match his locks. Tested every button on both fobs, walked both door handles for touch unlock, confirmed the start button read each fob cleanly.
The whole thing was done in the driveway. He paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted, kept his original fob registered, and now has a backup in case something happens down the road. That part matters on a Lexus smart key system: if he ever loses one fob later, it's still an add-a-key job. Lose both and it becomes a much longer, more involved procedure. Having a spare is real insurance on these cars.
