Got a call from a woman near the Woolworths Building downtown in Oxnard. She had a 2018 Lexus RC 350, one smart key, and it had stopped doing anything. Push to start gave her "Key not detected" on the dash. Door handles wouldn't respond to touch. Dead in a metered spot with errands left to run.
She had already called Lexus of Oxnard. They told her to tow it in and they could look at it the following day. Parts would need to be ordered if the fob was gone, which could mean another two or three days. She had work in the morning.
I got there inside of an hour. Popped her HYQ14FBA open on the trunk lid. The CR1632 looked recent but one of the board-side spring contacts on the AG board (0020) was bent flat, barely touching. That fob had probably been opened before by someone who pressed the battery in too hard.
Straightened the contact, seated a fresh CR1632, and clipped the shell back together. Then the real test: walk every door handle for touch unlock, check touch lock on the driver handle, run lock-unlock-trunk-panic from ten feet, twenty feet, and from inside the car. Push to start, clean and immediate.
She sat in the driver's seat for a second with the engine running, like she was waiting for it to quit again. It didn't.
No new fob needed. Just the right eyes on a small problem, done at the curb, for a fraction of what the dealer route would have run with the tow alone.
