A woman in Wagon Wheel called me about her RC. She said the key still worked but she was embarrassed to hand it to valets.
The rubber on two of the four buttons had worn down to the point where you could barely feel them, the shell had a hairline crack running from the corner toward the battery cover, and the emergency blade slot wobbled when you pushed on it. Cosmetically rough for a car that still looks sharp sitting in a driveway.
She had already called the dealer. They quoted her a number that included a whole new fob, programming time, and shop fees. Nobody there mentioned that what was actually wrong was the housing, not the electronics.
I pulled up to her garage and she brought the fob out to me. I opened it up on the hood of my van. The circuit board was clean. The transponder was seated right. The CR1632 still had a decent charge. Everything functional was fine. What she needed was a shell swap and fresh buttons, not a whole new fob.
I moved the working internals into a new housing, replaced the worn buttons, checked the emergency blade fit, and ran through every function: lock, unlock, the remaining buttons, and door handle touch response on both sides. Took about twenty minutes once I had the parts in hand.
She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted for a full replacement. The fob she handed back to valets that evening looked and worked like new.
