I got a call from a guy parked near the Starbucks off Wendy Drive in Newbury Park. He had his 2009 370Z, a dead fob, and somewhere to be.
He'd already tried the battery trick. Fresh CR2032, seated correctly, still nothing. The car wasn't recognizing the fob at all. Door handles wouldn't wake up, start button ignored him, and he was standing next to a car he couldn't get into.
When I pulled up, I had him hold the fob flat against the start button while I watched the dash. The key-not-detected warning cleared and the car started. It was the contact between the battery and the terminal inside the fob housing.
I popped the fob open on the hood. The positive terminal had a slight inward bend, barely visible, but enough that the new CR2032 wasn't making solid contact. Quick adjustment, reseated the battery, closed the housing.
Walked the car. Both door handles responding. Start button reading the fob from normal pocket distance. All four buttons working clean.
He asked what the dealer would have said. Probably a new fob, programming labor, a wait for parts. He was back on the road in under twenty minutes, and the original fob was still in his hand.
