2020 Nissan 370z
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2020 370Z?

The 2020 370Z uses a proximity-style smart fob with three buttons and a hidden emergency metal key blade inside. The fob communicates wirelessly with the vehicle's security system so the car recognizes it when you approach or touch the door handle, and again when you press the start button. If the fob isn't recognized, the car won't start even if the blade is cut correctly. The three-button layout handles lock, unlock, and a third function. There's a CR2032 battery inside.

Q: How long does the dealer process take for a 370Z key replacement?

Longer than you'd expect for what is ultimately a 15-to-20 minute programming job. Dealers typically treat it as a scheduled service appointment, so you call, get a quote, and wait for an open slot. If you're down to zero working keys and the car won't start, add a tow to that timeline. Once you're in the service lane, the actual key registration is fast, but the total visit rarely is.

Q: My 370Z start button is showing a key warning but the fob battery is fresh. What's going on?

This comes up a lot on 370Z forums and it's not always a fob problem. A few things to check first: The emergency blade inside the fob can work loose from the housing over time, which throws off the fob's internal layout and sometimes affects how the car reads it. Pop the blade out and make sure it's seated and locked back in correctly. If the warning is intermittent, check whether it happens consistently in one spot in the car.

Q: Can I buy a 370Z fob online and just have it programmed?

Yes, with a caveat. The fob needs to match the factory FCC ID on your existing key. If the aftermarket or used fob you bought doesn't carry the correct ID, it won't register to your vehicle regardless of what tools are used. Bring the fob you purchased to the appointment and a good locksmith will confirm compatibility before starting the job. If it matches, programming on site in Hollywood Beach is the same process either way.

2020 Nissan 370z Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A home daycare operator near Hollywood Beach had a 2020 370Z with a shell that had given up.

The plastic had split near the blade slot, and the rubber button covers were worn through to the point where two of the three buttons were just bare membrane. She'd called the dealer first. They told her a new key, cut and programmed, was the only path forward. She didn't ask what that meant for the working circuit board already inside her cracked fob, and they didn't volunteer it.

I pulled up to her bungalow that evening with replacement aftermarket shells and my decoding tools. The factory FCC ID on her fob matched what the car expected, and when I tested the board before touching anything, every function read clean. Lock, unlock, the third button, all of it. The electronics were fine.

I transferred the working circuit board into a fresh housing, seated the CR2032 correctly, and buttoned it up. Then I cut a replacement blade from a lock decode on the door cylinder and verified it turned clean. Walked every button. Checked that the push-button start recognized the fob at normal range inside the car, not just pressed against the reader.

Her cracked key was her only one. So before I packed up, we added a second fob on site, programmed alongside the original, so she now has a backup. The dealer quote was for a single new key. She left with two working fobs for a fraction of what they wanted, without towing the car anywhere.

Nissan 370z Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Nissan dealer to get a replacement key for a 2020 370Z?▼

No. A mobile locksmith with the right diagnostic equipment can cut and program a replacement smart key for the 2020 370Z on site, wherever the car is. The dealer is not the only option. Where the confusion comes from: Nissan's immobilizer requires proper key registration through the diagnostic port, and some locksmiths without the correct tooling tell owners the dealer is their only choice. That's a tooling problem, not a rule.
