2016 Nissan 370z Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in River Park/Wagon Wheel, I got a call from a woman who had owned her 2016 370z for about three years without ever thinking about the key. One fob, no spare, and she'd been fine. Then the push-button start started acting up - sometimes it read the fob, sometimes it threw a key-not-detected warning and just sat there. She figured it was the battery, swapped it herself, and for about a week things seemed fine. Then it got worse.
By the time she called me, the car was occasionally not starting at all on the first press. She'd have to pull the fob out of her pocket, hold it closer to the start button, and try again. Intermittent, annoying, and the kind of thing that makes you nervous every time you leave somewhere.
I met her in the parking area near her building. First thing I did was open the fob and check her battery swap. She'd put in the right size, but the contact plate on the positive side had a slight upward bow from where the old battery had swelled just enough to push it. The new CR2032 was sitting in there but not making solid contact. Took about two minutes to seat the contact correctly.
After that I ran a diagnostic check through the OBD port anyway, just to confirm the immobilizer and the fob were talking cleanly, and registered her a second key so she'd have a spare going forward. Tested both fobs at the door handles, at the start button, and walked the car. Everything came back solid.
She'd already mentally budgeted for a dealer visit and a tow, because the 370z is a low car and she wasn't sure a flatbed could even get to it in that lot. Turned out she didn't need any of that. Two fobs, done on site, for a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
