A guy in Casa Conejo called me on a weeknight. His 370Z was sitting in the driveway, push-button start, and his only fob had gone completely dark. Not intermittent. Done. He had a swing shift that started early the next morning and was already pricing out Ubers and thinking about when he could get a tow scheduled.
He told me the fob had been acting up for a few weeks. Short range, sometimes the door handles wouldn't respond on the first touch. He figured it was the battery and kept meaning to swap it. Then one evening it just stopped talking to the car entirely. The dash was giving him a key-not-detected warning and the start button wouldn't do anything useful.
I pulled up to his place, connected my diagnostic equipment to the OBD port, and ran the all-keys-lost procedure for the Nissan Intelligent Key system. It does a timed handshake with the vehicle's security system, clears the old registered fobs from memory, and then learns the new key. His old fob, the one that died, got erased in the process so it couldn't be used to start the car even if someone found it.
The new fob I brought was a 4-button unit with the emergency insert blade already cut to his car. After the programming cycle finished I walked every function: door handle touch unlock on both sides, the push-button start, lock, unlock, and the other buttons. Everything confirmed before I packed up.
He asked what the dealer would have charged. I gave him the honest answer: more, plus the tow, plus however long it would have taken to get an appointment. He made his shift with time to spare.
