I was out in Saticoy on a Tuesday afternoon when I got a call from a guy who had been sitting in a parking lot off Telephone Road for about forty minutes. His 2017 370Z was showing a key-not-detected warning and would not start. He had already tried the obvious stuff: walked away and came back, held the fob closer, cycled the ignition a couple of times. Nothing.
When I pulled up, he handed me the fob right away. I could tell from the way he was holding it that he had been pressing it pretty hard, like more pressure was going to change anything. The CR2032 inside tested low but not completely flat, which is exactly the kind of in-between state that makes these calls interesting. Not dead enough to obviously fail, just weak enough to confuse the system under certain conditions.
I swapped the battery on the spot. Fob came back clean, start button responded normally, door handles lit right up on approach. That was the whole job.
He mentioned he had already called the Nissan dealer earlier that morning. They told him to tow it in and said key issues on the 370Z could involve reprogramming, which would mean scheduling a diagnostic appointment. He was already mentally preparing for a multi-day situation.
Done in about fifteen minutes on site. The dealer visit never happened.
