2005 Scion TC
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know I am getting the right replacement fob for a 2005 Scion tC?

The factory FCC ID on the fob is the identifier that matters. It is printed on the back of your original. When I show up, I verify that number before I touch anything, so the replacement matches exactly. Buying a fob online without confirming that match is how people end up with a shell that physically looks right but will not program to the car.

Q: Do I need to bring my car somewhere to get a replacement key made?

No. I come to wherever the car is. The parking lot at your job, your driveway in Five Points, wherever it sits. My setup handles cutting and programming on site. You do not need a tow, you do not need a shop appointment, and you do not need to block off half a workday. For a lot of tC owners, that is the part that surprises them most. The whole thing happens at the car, in about 30 minutes.

Q: My 2005 Scion tC starts fine but the lock and unlock buttons on the key stopped working. What is going on?

This comes up a lot with these remote head keys. Because the fob and the ignition key are one unit, people assume if the car starts, the remote side is fine. Not always. The remote function runs through the vehicle's receiver module, which is separate from the transponder read that handles starting. A few things can cause this: dead or weak CR2016, cracked housing letting moisture into the board, or a receiver that has dropped its learned key memory.

Q: Can I program a second key myself at home for the 2005 Scion tC?

No onboard DIY sequence exists for this one. Programming the remote head key on the 2005 tC requires a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port. There is no ignition-turn trick or button combination that registers a new key on this system. If you bought a fob online, it still needs a tech with the right equipment to pair it to your car before it does anything.

2005 Scion TC Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a graphic designer working out of a studio near Five Points in Oxnard. She had been pricing a spare key for her 2005 Scion tC and the dealer quote had stopped her cold. Parts, programming, and the fact that she would have had to leave the car there during a workday when she was deep in a client deadline.

She found me and asked if I could come to her. I told her that was the whole job.

I pulled up to the studio parking lot on her lunch break. The tC was sitting right out front. I set up on the hood, popped the OBD port under the dash, and got into the key programming sequence with my diagnostic tool. The remote head key on this car is one piece, so there is no separate fob to pair separately from the blade. You program the whole unit at once.

Thirty minutes. New key cut to the car, transponder registered, all three buttons tested, door locks cycling the way they should.

She was back inside before her break was over. She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted, and she did not have to arrange a ride or a day off.

What battery does the 2005 Scion tC key fob use?▼

It takes a CR2016. That is a thinner coin cell than the more common CR2032, and the two are easy to mix up at a hardware or grocery store because they look nearly identical sitting on a shelf. The CR2016 is noticeably thinner, so if the back of your fob feels like it is not closing cleanly after a battery swap, wrong size is the first thing to check.
