2006 Scion TC Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in El Rio, a woman had been driving with one key for about two years after her spare went missing at a move. She finally called when that single key started acting up on her 2006 Scion TC. The remote buttons had gotten unreliable, and she was worried it was heading toward a no-start.
She was parked near home when I got there. First thing I did was pop the back of the remote head and check the CR2016. The battery was still the original Toyota-stamped one from whenever the car was last at a dealer, so it had years on it. Voltage was low enough to explain the flaky buttons. Swapped it out right there.
Buttons came back. But she still wanted a spare cut and programmed, which was the smart call. All-keys-lost situations on these are a longer job, and having a working backup avoids that entirely.
I ran the programming sequence through the OBD port, got the new remote head key registered to the immobilizer, cut the blade to match, and walked her through testing every function on both keys. Start, lock, unlock, all of it confirmed.
She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a number that made her set the phone down. The dealer route isn't wrong, it's just the slow expensive version of the same job.
