Parked in a lot off Hollywood Beach, she had already been sitting there for about twenty minutes by the time I pulled up.
The 2012 tC was locked. She had the fob in her hand and it was doing nothing. No click, no lights, no response from the door handles. She mentioned she had replaced the battery herself about three weeks before, so her first guess was that she bought a bad cell.
I asked her to hold the fob close to the start button and try. The car woke up. That told me the fob was alive, just broadcasting weak. The touch-unlock on the driver handle had also gone unresponsive, so she assumed the whole system was falling apart.
I popped the fob open on the hood. The CR1632 she had installed was seated slightly off-angle, and one of the battery contacts had a minor outward bow, probably from the old battery expanding before it died. The cell itself still showed a voltage reading, but contact was intermittent. I reseated it correctly, brought the contact back to where it should be, and closed it up.
Then I walked every function. Touch unlock on both handles, lock button, the other buttons, and the start sequence. Everything came back clean.
