Got a call from a guy at his apartment complex near the Via Marina neighborhood in Oxnard. He had one working key left on his 2008 Scion tC and the plastic housing was cracked halfway down the seam. He said the dealer quoted him almost double what he expected, plus he would need to get the car over there and wait a few days for the key to come in. He just wanted a spare before the original finally split apart and the transponder chip fell out on a parking lot somewhere.
I parked next to his tC and used my TOY43 Lishi to decode the door lock, reading each wafer position one by one so I could cut an exact blade without needing his cracked original as a template. The 2008 tC uses the same 4D-67 chip and MOZB41TG remote head as a bunch of Toyota-platform cars from that era, so I had the blank ready to go.
Cut the key, seated a fresh CR2016, then connected through the OBD port to register the new transponder. The whole thing took about 25 minutes. He tested both keys, locked and unlocked from across the lot, started the engine twice each.
He kept looking at the cracked one like he was surprised it still worked at all. Honestly, it probably would not have lasted another month. He got his spare for a fraction of what the dealer wanted and never left his building.
