Over in Heritage Square in Oxnard, a woman flagged me down at the Target parking lot. Not literally, but close. Her coworker had passed along my number after I'd done a job for him, and she called while standing next to her 2013 Scion TC with one working key and a growing sense of dread about what happens when that one disappears.
She'd already called the dealer. They quoted her for a new key, the cut, and the programming, and told her to plan on leaving the car there for part of the day. That's what pushed her to call me instead.
I pulled up, connected my Smart Pro through the OBD-II port under the dash, and got into the immobilizer module. Her TC uses the HYQ14ACX remote head key with the Toyota H-chip inside, three buttons on the fob side: lock, unlock, trunk. The programming sequence is a handshake between my tool and the 93C56 EEPROM on the immobilizer board. Once the new transponder registers, the ECU accepts it on startup just like the original.
Cut the blade on my Triton, programmed the chip, tested ignition twice, cycled all three remote buttons from ten feet out. She watched the whole thing from a shopping cart's distance away, half paying attention, half scrolling her phone. When I handed her the second key she just looked relieved, like a weight came off.
Twenty minutes start to finish, for a fraction of what the dealer wanted, and she never left the parking lot.
