I was parked near Hobson Park in Oxnard when the call came in. A woman at a shopping center not far from there had her 2013 Scion TC and a problem she'd been sitting on for a week. Her original key was working, barely, but she wanted a spare cut and programmed before it gave out completely. She'd called the dealer first. They gave her a number that made her put the phone down.

When I got to her, I pulled the fob apart so she could see what was inside. She pointed at the circuit board and said she'd assumed this was the part that made it dealer-only. I get that a lot. We tested the remote functions, confirmed the engine started clean, and that was it. She saved a good chunk compared to the dealer quote she'd been given, and she didn't have to sit in a service waiting room for half a day.
She asked if she should program a third key while I was there. Smart question. Having two working keys in the system before something goes wrong is always the better position to be in.
