A guy was staying at a spot in Hollywood by the Sea, out in Oxnard, doing a solo road trip up the coast. He had one key. No backup. And somewhere between the beach and his car in the lot, the fob stopped working.
Push-button start wouldn't respond. He tried the door handle touch unlock. Nothing. He found the emergency blade tucked inside the fob and got into the car, but the start sequence with a low-battery fob wasn't clicking for him. He'd read something online about holding the fob up to the start button, tried it a few times, didn't get the right result. He called the dealer. Tow it in, they said. Earliest appointment was the following afternoon. He was parked in a lot a long way from that dealership and had no interest in paying for a tow on top of everything else.

The fob battery was completely dead, which explained why the backup-start method wasn't landing. Once I confirmed what I was working with, I pulled the right replacement fob from the van, cut the blade to his car on site, and paired the new fob to the vehicle through the OBD port. The whole thing took about 25 to 30 minutes in the parking lot.
He asked if I could also show him where the emergency blade slot was on the new fob, so he'd know next time. That part took about 15 seconds.
The dealer quote was steep, and that wasn't counting the tow. He paid a fraction of that, didn't move the car, and made his drive north the next morning on schedule.
