2011 Scion TC
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know if I have the right replacement fob for my 2011 Scion tC?

Check the factory FCC ID printed on the back of your original fob and match it to the replacement before programming. A fob with the wrong identifier won't pair correctly no matter what equipment you use. I verify this before I start any job so there's no back-and-forth about whether the part is right.

Q: Do I need to bring my car somewhere to get a replacement key made?

No. I come to you. Parking lot in Hollywood by the Sea, your driveway, wherever the car sits. The van carries the cutting equipment and the programming tools, so there's no reason to tow it or drive it anywhere. For smart key replacements on this generation, programming goes through the OBD port and takes about 25 to 30 minutes on site. You're back on the road the same visit.

Q: My 2011 Scion tC shows a key warning on the dash and the push-button start won't respond. Is the fob dead or is something wrong with the car?

Start with the fob battery. A dead or nearly dead CR1632 will kill proximity detection before anything else fails. When the battery drops low enough, the car can't see the fob at all, and you'll get a key-not-detected warning even if you're sitting right in the seat holding the fob.

Q: I have one key left for my 2011 Scion tC. Can you make a second one before I lose the first?

Yes, and that's the smarter move. Adding a spare while you still have a working key is faster and simpler than an all-keys-lost job, which requires a longer reset procedure. Get the spare made now, keep it somewhere that isn't your regular keychain, and you won't be calling from a parking lot in a bad spot later.

2011 Scion TC Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy was staying at a spot in Hollywood by the Sea, out in Oxnard, doing a solo road trip up the coast. He had one key. No backup. And somewhere between the beach and his car in the lot, the fob stopped working.

Push-button start wouldn't respond. He tried the door handle touch unlock. Nothing. He found the emergency blade tucked inside the fob and got into the car, but the start sequence with a low-battery fob wasn't clicking for him. He'd read something online about holding the fob up to the start button, tried it a few times, didn't get the right result. He called the dealer. Tow it in, they said. Earliest appointment was the following afternoon. He was parked in a lot a long way from that dealership and had no interest in paying for a tow on top of everything else.

He found me, I drove out to Hollywood by the Sea that evening.

The fob battery was completely dead, which explained why the backup-start method wasn't landing. Once I confirmed what I was working with, I pulled the right replacement fob from the van, cut the blade to his car on site, and paired the new fob to the vehicle through the OBD port. The whole thing took about 25 to 30 minutes in the parking lot.

He asked if I could also show him where the emergency blade slot was on the new fob, so he'd know next time. That part took about 15 seconds.

The dealer quote was steep, and that wasn't counting the tow. He paid a fraction of that, didn't move the car, and made his drive north the next morning on schedule.

What battery does the 2011 Scion tC key fob use?▼

CR1632. That's a specific size, and it matters. The CR1632 is thinner than the more common CR2032 that people sometimes grab by mistake. If the wrong cell goes in, the contact plate won't make solid contact and you'll get weak range or a key-not-detected warning even though the battery is brand new. Every replacement fob I build for this car gets a fresh, correctly sized CR1632 before it leaves my hands.
