2015 Scion TC
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the programming actually take once you're at my car?

For a 2015 tC with at least one working key, adding a second fob through the OBD port usually runs 15 to 20 minutes on site. All-keys-lost is a different job. The immobilizer has to be reset before it will accept any new fob, and that reset involves a timed sequence you can't skip. Figure 30 to 45 minutes for that scenario. Either way, you're not waiting days.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer?

It's not even close. The dealer timeline usually means scheduling an appointment, possibly ordering the fob if it's not on the shelf, waiting for parts, then bringing the vehicle in. That whole chain can stretch across multiple days. I carry the blanks and equipment on every call. Single visit, same day, done in under an hour from the time you call.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2015 tC. Can I program it myself?

No. The tC smart key doesn't have a DIY button sequence or ignition-turn relearn for adding a new fob. Registering one requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. The fob you bought online isn't useless, some aftermarket blanks cut and program fine, but you still need a tech with the right tools to pair it to the car. If you already have it, bring it up when you call.

Q: The key-not-detected warning keeps coming up even though my battery is new. What else should I check?

A few things before assuming the fob is dead. First, check how the CR1632 is seated. If the previous battery was pried out instead of popped, the contact clip can get a slight bend that looks fine but doesn't hold a solid connection. Re-seat the battery and press the clip down gently. Second, interference.

2015 Scion TC Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A chiropractor's assistant in Five Points, Oxnard had a problem she couldn't schedule her way out of.

The head of her tC key had cracked. The blade was still hanging on but wobbling, and she'd already had one moment where it didn't turn cleanly in the ignition. She looked up the dealer route, did the math on towing the car and sitting in a waiting room, and called me instead.

She had a break between patients. Maybe 30 minutes. That was the window.

I pulled into the lot, got eyes on the key, and saw the crack ran right through the housing near the blade pivot. The remote portion still worked but it was only a matter of time. I decoded the lock from the cylinder, cut a fresh blade, built out the new fob, and ran the programming through the OBD port. By the time I tested all three buttons and walked the doors, she had two working keys and was back inside before her next patient came through the door.

Her car never moved. She didn't burn a vacation day or a tow bill. The dealer comparison came up at the end, almost as an aside. She'd been quoted a number that required a tow on top of it, and her car was sitting right there in the lot the whole time.

Scion TC Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call me. Dealer service departments close early and run limited Saturday hours. Lose your only tC key on a Friday evening and you're looking at Monday before a dealer can even start the conversation. I work evenings and weekends because that's when most people actually discover they need a key. One call, I come to wherever the car is in Oxnard, and the job gets done that day.
