Q: What kind of key does the 2004 Toyota Matrix use exactly?

It is a two-piece system. You get a separate key fob for locking and unlocking, and a standard turn key for the ignition that carries a transponder chip inside the head. The fob and the key live on the same ring but do different jobs. The fob takes a CR2032 battery and has three buttons. The ignition key communicates with the immobilizer to authorize starting. They are independent enough that one can fail without affecting the other.

2004 Toyota Matrix Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Westlake Village, a guy found me the way I like best: he already knew what he was looking at when he called. He had watched one of my Toyota key videos, seen the whole job on screen, and saved my number before anything ever went wrong with his car.
