A guy was parked near the Premium Outlets Area in Camarillo when his key snapped. Not slowly, not a warning. Just a clean break mid-turn in the ignition. Half the blade stayed in the cylinder, half came out in his hand. He was on the shoulder, already on his phone with another shop, and the quote he got was for a full ignition replacement with drilling. He hadn't even called around yet when I got there.
I told him to hold off. A drilled cylinder is gone forever, and that's never the first move.
I used a Lishi-style extraction tool that fits Toyota's keyway profile. The trick with a broken blade in a Toyota ignition is not to force anything. You work around the fragment, get behind it, and coax it out without disturbing the wafers. It came out clean. No scoring inside, no wafer damage.
From there I decoded the lock directly from the wafer positions, cut a new blade to match, and programmed the transponder through the OBD port. The remote portion of his key was never the problem. The head was intact, fob buttons all worked. I only needed to sort the blade and get the chip recognized again.
His original ignition cylinder works exactly the same as the day he bought the car. The other shop's plan would have cost him considerably more and left him with a replaced ignition he didn't need. Non-destructive is always the first call.
