Got a call from a driver stuck on the highway shoulder near the Camarillo Heights area in Camarillo. His 2013 Toyota Matrix key blade snapped clean in the ignition. Half the blade jammed in the cylinder, half in his hand.
He already had one quote from another locksmith: full ignition replacement, drill the cylinder, new parts. That's one way to do it. Not my way.
I used a TOY43AT Lishi tool to work around the broken fragment and extract it without touching the wafers inside. The TOY43AT fits the Toyota 8-cut keyway on the Matrix and lets me read the wafer depths while I'm in there. So once the fragment came out clean, I already had the cut code. Fresh blade cut on site, 4D-67 chip programmed through the OBD port using the vehicle's existing immobilizer ECU.
His remote head was the GQ4-29T with the 89070-02270 housing, four buttons. The remote portion was still working fine since the electronics sit in the head, not the blade. I just needed to pair the new transponder to the car.
He stood there watching the whole extraction, arms crossed, not saying a word. When the new key turned the ignition and the engine fired, he looked at the old broken piece in his hand and just shook his head.
No drill marks. No new cylinder. Original lock works the same as the day he bought it.
