Out in Rancho Conejo, a guy had been at a trailhead off the Conejo Valley open space most of the morning. Somewhere between the trail and the gravel lot, his only Matrix key disappeared. No spare at home. No magnetic hide-a-key box under the bumper. Just a locked car and a dead phone battery he was nursing on low power mode.

When I pulled up, first thing I did was pull the VIN off the dash. North American build, which confirmed the approach I'd be taking on the immobilizer side. Then I decoded the door lock cylinder mechanically to get the exact cut depths for the blade. No guessing, no generic cut. Reading the wafer positions in the lock gives you the real biting pattern, and that's what gets you into the car and cuts a key that works the ignition on the first try.
Once I had the mechanical side handled and the door open, I went through the OBD port and ran the immobilizer registration process. All-keys-lost on this generation Toyota means clearing the existing key memory and enrolling the new fob fresh. His old key, wherever it ended up on that trail, gets wiped out of the system at the same time. Can't start the car with it even if someone finds it.
The fob I brought matched the factory FCC ID, 3 buttons, CR2032. Cut the blade, programmed the chip, synced the remote. Tested the lock, unlock, and the third button. Tested the ignition. Done in the dirt lot, no tow, no wait.
He asked what the dealer would have told him. I said they'd have needed a tow since there was no way to drive it in, then probably a day or two on the service schedule, and the bill would have been significantly higher. He just nodded. He'd already assumed as much.
