Got a call from a guy in Gardens of the World in Thousand Oaks around 9 PM on a weeknight. His 2009 Matrix was parked in the driveway and his only key had snapped clean at the bow, right where the plastic meets the metal blade. The transponder chip was still in the plastic half, the blade was stuck in the ignition.
He had already called the dealer. They told him to tow it in, leave it, and they would get to it in two to three days. He said he just sat on his front step for a while after that call.
I pulled the broken blade out of the ignition cylinder with an extractor, no drama. Then I cut a fresh TOY43 blank on my Condor, cloned the 4D-67 chip from the broken key head since the chip itself was fine, and tested the new key in the ignition. Engine turned right over, immobilizer light on the dash went out after a second like it should.
The whole thing took maybe 25 minutes. He kept turning the new key over in his hand like he was checking if it was real.
He did not need a tow. He did not need to wait three days. He paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted him and his car was running before I left the curb.
