A woman at her apartment off Thousand Oaks Boulevard corridor had exactly that happen to her 2007 Matrix. The key shell cracked at the housing and the blade snapped clean off in the driver door lock. Half stuck in the cylinder, the fob housing in her other hand. Zero working keys.
I pulled my VVDI2 and read the transponder data straight from the broken key's 4D-67 chip, which was still intact inside the cracked housing. That saved a full all-keys-lost reset through the OBD port, which on these takes longer because the immobilizer ECU needs a timed seed-key handshake. I extracted the blade fragment from the lock, decoded the wafers, and cut two fresh TOY43 blanks. Her GQ43VT14T remote got rebuilt into a new shell with the original circuit board and chip transplanted over.
She went from zero working keys to two in about 40 minutes. The whole thing happened in her parking spot.
A full AKL without salvageable pieces runs more, and the dealer quoted her something north of that anyway. If your key is broken but you still have the pieces, bring them. The 4D-67 chip inside a cracked housing is almost always fine and makes the job faster.
