I got a call around eleven at night from a guy in a taco stand parking lot off the main strip in Thousand Oaks. He works a bar, had just closed up, and his 1998 Passat would not start. Not a slow crank, not a clicking relay. Nothing.

I connected my diagnostic equipment and checked the immobilizer. The fob had dropped out of the car's key memory. On these late-90s Passats, a voltage dip is enough to break that pairing. His car battery had been borderline for a while and the system lost the fob during one of those dips. I charged the battery enough to stabilize everything, then reprogrammed the fob through the OBD port.
The car fired up on the first try. He just stood there for a second watching the dash like he didn't trust it yet.
I told him the real problem was the vehicle battery, not the fob. The fob was just the symptom. He said his girlfriend had been saying the battery sounded weak for a month. She was right.
He made his opening shift. The dealer would have had him towing, waiting, and paying a lot more. I was gone in under an hour.
