Got a call around 11pm from the Dos Vientos neighborhood in Thousand Oaks. Guy works bar shifts and had just closed up. His 1998 Volkswagen Passat would not crank. Key in the ignition, turn, nothing. The immobilizer light on the dash was on solid instead of flashing and going out like it should.

I got out there and connected to the car through the OBD port. The Immo-3 system had lost its key adaptation. The car battery had been weak for weeks, and a voltage dip during shutdown caused the immobilizer control module to drop the stored key data. Classic B5 Passat issue. The forums on VWVortex are full of these. Low voltage messes with the Immo-3 cluster and the car acts like it has never seen your key before.
I pulled the SKC code from the cluster, re-adapted his ID48 transponder through the diagnostic port, and verified the immobilizer light cycled off within two seconds of key-on. Then I tested all four remote buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, panic. All responding clean.
Charged his battery enough to get home and told him the real fix was a new battery before it happened again.
He made his morning shift. The whole thing took about 40 minutes in that parking lot.
