A barista in the Downtown Carpinteria area called me about her 2003 Volkswagen Passat. Another locksmith had already tried to program a key, failed partway through, and left fault codes in the Immo3 module. He charged her for "the attempt" and told her to go to the dealer. I plugged my IM608 into the OBD-II port and pulled the cluster. The previous tech had tried to force a key learning procedure meant for Immobilizer II, which is a completely different protocol. The Immo3 controller on the 3B0 920 cluster board was stuck mid-write with leftover fault codes, including 01176 (Key Signal Too Small) and 01177 (Key Adaptation Not Carried Out). That combination locks out the whole system if you don't clear it correctly.
I reset the adaptation channels, cleared the codes, and ran a clean Immo3 key learning sequence from scratch. Her 4-button flip key, FCC ID NBG735868T with the ID48 chip, registered on the first pass. I showed her the confirmation screen so she could see it was fully paired this time.
The Passat started clean. I didn't charge extra for the cleanup because undoing someone else's mess is just part of doing the job right. The whole thing took about 40 minutes on her street. The dealer had quoted her a tow-in plus a multi-day wait.
