My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out and fix it?

Yes, and this is one of the more common calls I get on these older VW flip keys. The pivot pin on the flip mechanism wears down or the plastic housing cracks around it, and the blade either detaches or binds inside the cylinder.

If the blade is stuck in the ignition, I extract it first without damaging the cylinder, then assess the key. As long as the transponder chip and the remote board inside the head are intact, I transfer them into a new replacement housing and cut a fresh blade. The car never has to be reprogrammed because the original chip moves over. You end up with a fully working key in a housing that isn't going to fail on you again in a week. Skip the super glue. It holds for a few days and then you're back to square one.

What exactly is a remote flip key and how does it work?

Your 2000 Passat uses a flip key where the blade folds into the fob body when you're not using it. Inside that fob there are actually two separate systems doing two separate jobs.

The transponder chip in the key head communicates with the immobilizer every time you turn the ignition. If the car doesn't get the right signal from that chip, it won't start, regardless of whether the blade is cut correctly. That's the security side.

The remote board handles your four buttons: lock, unlock, and the other two functions. That side runs on a CR2032 battery. If the battery dies, your remote functions stop working but the car can still start, because those two systems don't depend on each other.

Both have to be working for the key to do everything it's supposed to do.

My Volkswagen is showing a warning and won't start. Is it the key?

Start with the fob battery. A weak CR2032 is the most common cause of weird behavior on these, and it's a two-minute fix.

If the car cranks but won't start and you're seeing a key-not-detected warning or an immobilizer indicator on the dash, that's the transponder side of the problem, not the remote. The engine management system isn't recognizing the chip.

A few things can cause that: a damaged or cracked transponder chip inside the fob head, a key that's been dropped or gotten wet and lost its programming, or in some cases the immobilizer unit itself. On these older Passats, there's also an antenna ring around the ignition cylinder that reads the chip. If that ring fails, the car won't recognize any key.

If the battery swap doesn't change anything, call me. I can read what the system is seeing and tell you whether it's the key or something upstream.

Can I program a second key myself at home, or do I need equipment?

On the 2000 Passat, adding a key to the immobilizer isn't something you can do with an ignition-turn sequence or a button trick the way some older domestic vehicles allow. The transponder chip has to be enrolled using a diagnostic tool that can communicate with the immobilizer system. That's true whether you're adding a spare or replacing a lost key.

The remote side, meaning the lock and unlock functions, is a separate question. VW used an onboard procedure on some models from this era where you could sync a remote to the receiver by holding buttons in a specific sequence. Whether that works on your specific car depends on the receiver, and even if it does, it only handles the remote functions. The transponder enrollment still needs the right equipment.

Bottom line: buy the blank if you want, but plan on having someone with a proper tool finish the job.

The remote buttons stopped working but the car still starts. Do I need a whole new key?

Probably not. The transponder and the remote are independent, so a dead remote doesn't mean the key is done.

First stop: replace the CR2032. These batteries drop off fast when they're old, and reduced range or complete button failure is almost always the battery before it's anything else. Pop the housing, swap the cell, reseat it firmly, and test.

If a fresh battery doesn't bring it back, the remote board inside the fob may have failed, or the housing took a hit and cracked the board. In that case I can transfer the working transponder chip into a new housing with a fresh remote board. You don't lose your programming and you don't pay for a full key replacement.
