A surf instructor near Wheeler Hot Springs in Ojai lost his only key during a lesson. Best guess, it went out with the tide. His 2014 Volkswagen Passat was sitting in the lot, locked, no spare anywhere.
He had already called another locksmith. That guy's plan was to drill the ignition cylinder, replace it, then program a new key. The quote was steep, and it meant tearing into the steering column. He called me looking for something less destructive.

The harder part on these is the immobilizer. The 2014 Passat NMS uses IMMO4 with a Megamos 48 chip, and the security data is tied to the instrument cluster. For an all-keys-lost job, I pull the cluster, read the EEPROM off the NEC MCU on the back of the board, extract the pin and CS data, then program the new transponder. After that, I paired the NBG010180T remote through OBD, tested all four buttons, lock, unlock, trunk, panic, and confirmed the engine cranked clean.
He watched me put the cluster back in, checked his dash for warning lights, and just nodded. No drilling. No cylinder swap. His Passat looked the same as before the ocean ate his key, and I saved him a good chunk over what the other shop quoted.
