What exactly is a remote flip key and how does it work on my XC90?

It's a folding key where the metal blade folds into the body of the fob when not in use, then flips out when you press the release button. Your 2005 XC90 uses a 5-button version of this setup.

The key does two separate jobs. The blade and its internal chip handle starting the car: the immobilizer reads the chip every time you turn the ignition, and if it doesn't get the right response, the engine won't start. The fob portion handles remote functions like locking and unlocking. Both sides have to be working and correctly matched to your vehicle for the key to do its full job. A replacement has to be both cut to your specific vehicle and programmed, not just one or the other.

For a job where a working key is present, a capable OBD-based programmer can handle the registration while everything stays in the car. For all-keys-lost, it's a different story. That typically means removing the central electronics module and working with it on the bench, reading stored data directly from the module itself. That process requires both the right hardware and the right adapters for this specific module design.

Locksmiths on professional forums are pretty direct about it: generic or budget tools either can't complete the job or take so long and produce so many errors that the risk of a bad write goes up. This is one of those vehicles where the gear the tech brings determines whether the job gets done at all. I carry what this car needs.

My XC90 key fob stopped locking and unlocking remotely but the car still starts fine. What's going on?

Pretty common on these. The transponder side of the flip key and the remote entry side are functionally independent. The chip that talks to the immobilizer can still be good while the remote transmitter inside the fob is weak or dead.

First thing to try is a fresh CR2032. A low battery on this fob will kill the remote range well before it affects starting. If a new battery doesn't fix it, check that the battery contacts inside the fob aren't bent or corroded from a previous battery swap. If the range is still weak or dead after that, the fob itself may have failed on the transmitter side. That's a reprogramming job, not just a battery swap.

Can I buy a replacement fob online and just have it programmed, or do I need to buy the key from you?

You can source a key blank elsewhere, but be careful. The factory fob for this vehicle has a specific part number, and there are a lot of aftermarket versions floating around online that look identical on the outside but have inconsistent internal components. Some program without issues. Others fight the process or fail entirely, and at that point you've lost the money on the blank and still need a reliable one.

If you bring your own blank and it doesn't take the program, I'm not responsible for the cost of the blank. That said, I keep correct blanks in stock, so the cleanest path is usually letting me supply the key and handle the whole job. If you want to source your own, just make sure it matches the factory FCC ID on your original fob.
