2022 Volvo Xc90
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much harder is it when all keys are lost versus just adding a spare?

Significantly harder on a 2022 XC90. Adding a spare when you still have one working key is a relatively clean programming session. All-keys-lost is a different situation entirely. The vehicle's security module needs to be accessed, the existing key memory cleared, and the new key or keys enrolled from scratch. On the XC90 this requires professional-grade diagnostic software with Volvo coverage, and the process has a timed security sequence built into it.

Q: Do aftermarket or used OEM Volvo fobs actually work, or is it dealer-only hardware?

Used OEM fobs can work when programmed with the right equipment. The XC90's security system does not require a virgin fob in the same way some platforms do, so a used factory fob sourced from a reputable supplier is a legitimate option. Cheap aftermarket electronics are a different story. Volvo's security architecture is not forgiving of out-of-spec hardware, and owners on forums have reported pairing failures and intermittent behavior with low-grade aftermarket units.

Q: My XC90 fob worked fine, then it started taking two or three presses to lock or unlock. Is the fob failing?

Not necessarily. Reduced response on a button or two is almost always the CR2032 dropping below the threshold the fob needs to transmit cleanly, even if the battery still reads voltage on a meter. A weak cell can power the fob in your hand but not throw a strong enough signal for reliable communication with the car. Swap the CR2032 first and use a name-brand cell, not a generic.

Q: Can I program a second key myself at home, or do I need a tech?

You need a tech. The 2022 XC90 has no onboard self-programming sequence for smart keys. There is no ignition-turn routine, no button combination, nothing you can do without diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. That DIY add-a-key method exists on some older vehicles with basic transponder keys, but it does not apply here. If you bought a fob online, it still needs to be enrolled to your specific vehicle by someone with the right Volvo-compatible software.

2022 Volvo Xc90 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call on the 101 stretch near Mussel Shoals on a Tuesday afternoon. Guy had pulled off because his 2022 XC90 was showing a key-not-detected warning on the dash and would not let him restart after a fuel stop. The fob was in his hand. He'd had it for about six months after replacing a lost key at the dealer.

He told me the dealer had programmed it months ago and it worked fine until that morning when he got a low-battery warning. He swapped the CR2032 himself at a gas station using a coin, except the new cell was one of those thin generic ones that sits just loose enough to lose contact on a bump.

I got there, popped the fob open the right way, and the battery was visibly tilted. Reseated it properly with a known-good CR2032, closed the cover, and the dash cleared immediately. Then I walked every function: door handles, lock, unlock, and the remaining buttons, just to confirm the fob was communicating cleanly across the board.

He asked if he needed a whole new key programmed. He didn't. Took maybe twelve minutes total, parked on the shoulder with trucks rolling past at seventy. He was back on the road before the tow truck he'd already called even confirmed the dispatch.

The dealer story came up on its own. He'd paid considerably more than he expected for the original replacement key, and he was relieved this wasn't another one of those situations. It wasn't.

Volvo Xc90 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace my 2022 Volvo XC90 key?▼

Call a mobile locksmith with Volvo-capable equipment before you call the dealer. Volvo dealers typically charge a significant amount for a smart key replacement when you add up the fob, the programming labor, and sometimes a tow if the car is immobilized. With EZ Car Keyz, you get the fob sourced from a professional supplier, full programming, and the job done at your location.
