She was at a farm-to-table spot in North Ventura when someone grabbed her purse off the back of her chair. Keys, wallet, phone, gone. She borrowed the server's phone, got the police on the line, and her partner tracked me down from there.
The 2021 XC90 was sitting in the parking lot with zero working keys. The Volvo dealer told her partner the car would need to be towed, the wait was five to seven business days, and they were recommending a full module re-registration because the stolen fob could still unlock the car. The estimate before towing was already over nine hundred.
I was there within the hour.
All-keys-lost on this vehicle means the first step is wiping the key memory entirely so the stolen fob becomes inert. That is not a small job on an SPA-generation Volvo. The security data has to be read through the OBD port with the right equipment, the old key identities cleared, and then two new fobs registered from scratch. I kept a support unit on the battery the entire time because a voltage drop mid-session on this platform resets the process.
Both fobs were paired and tested before the police called back with a case number. She drove home that night. The stolen fob is dead to that car now. Once the key memory is wiped, the old fob is just a piece of plastic with a battery in it.
The dealer quote was what it was. She paid a fraction of that and did not lose a week or a tow bill.
