Got a call from a woman over in the Mesa neighborhood in Santa Barbara. Her 2016 Volvo XC90 had one working key left, and the other one had gone through the washing machine two weeks prior. She said the dealer told her the replacement fob, part number 31652163, would take seven to ten business days to order, and the car had to be at the dealership for programming. She works at a clinic nearby and could not be without the car that long.
I pulled up in the van, and she was sitting on her front steps holding the dead fob in a ziplock bag like evidence. Still had dryer lint on it. I looked at it and the board was corroded around the battery terminals. No saving that one.
Her XC90 had the KVM module, which I confirmed by pulling the security access through my ACDP tool using the NASTF-sourced login. The KVM on these early SPA cars communicates over CAN with 128-bit AES, so the programmer has to read the encrypted key data from the module directly. No shortcuts, no OBD-only tricks.
Programmed the new YGOHUF8423, tested passive entry on all four doors plus the tailgate, verified push-button start, and ran the lock and unlock cycle from 30 feet to confirm range. Whole thing took about 35 minutes on her driveway.
She kept the dead fob in the ziplock. I told her it was a paperweight now. She laughed and said she was keeping it as a reminder to check her pockets.
