A guy in the Upper East neighborhood of Santa Barbara found me after another locksmith had already taken a run at his 2014 XC90. The job had looked fine at first. Key started the car. He paid, drove home, thought it was done.
By day five it was falling apart. Morning starts worked. By afternoon the vehicle was intermittently rejecting the fob. He would get a key-not-detected warning on the dash and the engine would crank without catching. He assumed the body control module was failing and started bracing for a big repair bill.
I met him in his driveway. Before touching the key I asked him to show me exactly how the other locksmith had left things. He pulled out the fob, pressed it, and it worked once. Then twice. Then nothing. Classic low-voltage behavior layered on top of something deeper.
I opened the fob on the spot. The CR2032 was reading low. I replaced it, and the remote range came back immediately, which told me the remote circuit was fine. But the intermittent no-start was a different problem. The transponder inside was the wrong variant for this XC90 generation. It was close enough to pass the first handshake in the immobilizer cycle but not close enough to hold. That is exactly how you get a key that works for a few days and then starts ghosting you.
I programmed a replacement fob with the correct transponder matched to his vehicle. Verified it through multiple cold starts. Checked that every button on the five-button fob was responding. Walked him through the backup antenna location in the center console, which is something most owners never know about until the battery dies at the worst possible moment.
He saved a good chunk compared to the dealer quote he had pulled just in case. More importantly, he did not have to tow it anywhere or sit in a waiting room. The whole job was done in his driveway on Junipero Street.
