A guy down in the Funk Zone in Santa Barbara flagged me from outside one of the cobbler shops on Anacapa. His 2014 XC90 would start fine in the morning, then by evening the dash would throw "Remote key not accepted" and the immobilizer would kill fuel mid-crank. He had already been to another locksmith. That key worked for about five days before the system started rejecting it intermittently.
He was convinced his CEM was dying. I told him to hold off on that thought.
I pulled his fob apart on the hood. FCC ID LQNP2T-APU, 5-button flip key, looked right from the outside. But when I read the transponder with my VVDI2, there it was. The previous locksmith had loaded the wrong chip type. On the P28 XC90, Volvo's CEM is specific about which Hitag2 variant it wants. A close-but-wrong chip can pass the initial handshake and then fail the secondary authentication, which is why it worked for a few days before going sideways.
His CR2032 was also nearly flat, which made the proximity detection even flakier on top of the bad chip.
I programmed a fresh fob with the correct transponder matched to his CEM and dropped in a new battery. That was months ago. Still working.
