Seaside Park resident called about her 2023 XC90. Dead fob at the worst possible time: groceries melting in the back, toddler getting cranky, and the car wouldn't recognize the key.
She'd already tried the emergency blade in the door handle cap. Got inside fine. But the start button just flashed orange and the dash showed "Key not in vehicle." Even holding the fob right against the start button did nothing. The CR2032 was fresh from yesterday.
I pulled diagnostics first. CEM showed stored code P156300 for key communication failure. The issue wasn't the battery or the chip. The fob's internal antenna had separated from the PCB, common failure on part 31652163 when dropped repeatedly.
I transferred her chip and board into a new shell, resoldered the antenna connection with proper flux, and ran a fresh key learn cycle through the CEM. The whole process took about an hour because XC90s need a specific sequence: ignition on, wait for CEM wake, initiate learn mode, then present both keys within 10 seconds.
When the car finally accepted the key and started normally, she just sat there for a minute with the AC running. Sometimes the fix is worth more than just the technical solution. The dealer wanted three days and significantly more money.
