A guy visiting his parents for the holidays over on the Eastside neighborhood in Santa Barbara called me about his 2012 Volvo XC90. He had one working key and a "spare" that had been sitting in a kitchen drawer for years. His real question was whether I could set him up with an aftermarket key he could actually carry daily, not another backup collecting dust.
Fair question. OEM Volvo fobs come from the factory supplier with the iron mark stamped on the housing. Aftermarket blanks for the LQNP2T-APU use the same high-security blade profile, same ID48 transponder chip matched to the CEM's encryption, same 5-button layout, same circuit board design. In daily use the functional difference is zero if the aftermarket blank is quality sourced.
I cut the blade on the hood of his XC90, programmed the transponder through the OBD port, and synced the remote. He clicked every button, locked it, unlocked it, popped the hatch. Then he just held both keys side by side comparing them like he was going to find the catch.
No Volvo logo on the back. Same button feel, same weight, same function. Where aftermarket goes wrong is cheap sourcing: thin shells, wrong chip spec, flimsy button pads.
