A guy near Santa Barbara City College flagged me down through YouTube. He'd watched one of my Volvo CEM bench videos months earlier, saw the whole process start to finish, and saved my number. When his 2006 XC90's 5-button flip key started losing range and acting inconsistent, he already knew the call to make.
I met him in the lot. His LQNP2T-APU fob would lock from three feet away but nothing beyond that. Sometimes the trunk button worked, sometimes it didn't. Classic aging remote behavior on these P2 Volvos.
I swapped in a fresh CR2032 first. That helped the range slightly but the intermittent trunk release stayed dead. Opened the fob and found one of the micro-solder points on the button board had a hairline crack. At that point a replacement fob was the right call, not a patch.
Cut the new blade to match, programmed the remote through the CEM with my VVDI, and went through every single button. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, hold-to-close-windows. Then three clean start cycles, key out, key in, engine running. Walked the parking lot testing range from about 40 feet in each direction.
He told me he almost called the Volvo dealer in Santa Barbara first but remembered the video. Saved himself a good chunk and never had to leave the lot.
