A guy from the Westside came to me through word of mouth. He'd already had a locksmith out to his 2011 XC90, paid for a key, and was still stranded. The engine cranked every time, healthy and strong, then died the moment it should have caught. The first locksmith told him the body control module was bad and walked away.
I drove out to him on the Westside and listened to the crank-and-die before I touched anything. That pattern, strong crank, immediate stall, no rough running, is almost always an immobilizer authorization problem, not a module hardware failure. The module was fine. What had happened was the previous programmer attempted to register the key over OBD without first reading the secured memory that holds the existing key data. On this generation XC90, that's not how it works. You have to pull the module, read the EEPROM on the bench, generate the correct key data from that dump, write it back, reinstall the module, and then finish the pairing through the diagnostic port. Skip the bench step and the registration never actually completes, even though the tool says it did.
I pulled the module, did the bench read, generated the data, wrote it back, reinstalled, and finished the sequence through the port. Three consecutive starts, clean every time. I walked him through what I was seeing on the tool screen at each stage so he understood why the first attempt failed and why this one worked.
He'd already spent money on the first attempt and gotten nothing for it. What I charged him was still a fraction of what the dealer quoted, and the job was done right on site, no tow, no waiting room.
