2013 Volvo Xc90
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you delete a lost or stolen key so it no longer starts my XC90?

Yes. When we run a full key-learning session on the 2013 XC90, the procedure wipes all previously registered keys from the immobilizer and re-registers only the keys physically present at the time of programming. Any key that isn't there gets erased. Lost key, stolen key, old spare you threw away, none of them work after that.

Q: Does the 2013 XC90 flip key have a hidden emergency blade, and how does the backup start work?

The blade is right there in plain sight on the flip key since it folds out mechanically. What most owners don't realize is that the driver door has a physical lock cylinder hidden behind a small cover on the handle. If the fob battery dies completely and the car doesn't respond to the remote, you can pop that cover and use the blade to get in the door.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need a locksmith?

You need someone with the right diagnostic equipment. The 2013 XC90 does not have a self-programming sequence you can run from the driver seat. There is no ignition-turn trick, no button combination. Adding a new key to this vehicle requires communicating with the vehicle security system through the diagnostic port using software that can talk to Volvo's architecture. If you bought a fob online, that's fine. Bring it.

Q: My XC90 shows a warning on the dash and won't start. Is my key the problem?

Not always. A key-not-detected warning with no start can come from the fob, but it can also come from the vehicle side. The 2013 XC90 has a body control module that manages security communication, and on this generation those modules can develop faults that look exactly like a key failure. Owners on forums report situations where the fob tests fine on a separate tool but the car still won't recognize it. Start with the simple stuff.

2013 Volvo Xc90 Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy who keeps his boat near Upper State Street had been watching my Volvo key videos for a while before he ever needed anything. He told me he'd seen the whole process laid out on screen and just kept my number saved. Smart move, because when his 2013 XC90 fob started acting up he wasn't in a panic, he was just ready to get it fixed.

The fob had been getting flaky for a few weeks. Range was down. He'd been pressing the buttons closer and closer to the door. Then one afternoon it stopped unlocking the car reliably from any distance. The blade still worked in the door lock, and the car still started, but the remote functions were going.

I met him near Upper State Street. He handed me the fob and I opened it up right there on the hood. The CR2032 was the original battery, still reading a voltage on the meter but weak enough that it couldn't drive the signal properly. The contacts also had a thin film of oxidation on them, the kind you only see once you're looking directly at it in the light.

Fresh battery, cleaned contacts, fob closed back up. Then I walked through every button, tested start and shutdown three times, and checked the range from across the lot. Everything came back clean.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him for a full replacement key with programming. He didn't need any of that. The fix was the battery and the contacts, done on site, for a fraction of what they wanted.

Volvo Xc90 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2013 Volvo XC90?▼

Call a mobile locksmith who actually works on Volvos rather than defaulting to the dealer. All-keys-lost on the 2013 XC90 is a real job that requires the right diagnostic software to communicate with the vehicle security system and register new keys from scratch. A lot of general locksmiths turn this one away, which pushes people straight to the dealer. That drives up cost and usually means a tow. We handle AKL on site.
