I got a call from a guy over in Samarkand, the quiet stretch of Santa Barbara just west of State Street. He had a 2007 XC90 that another locksmith had cut and programmed about a week earlier. It started fine for a few days. Then it got weird. Morning starts were fine. By evening the car was intermittently rejecting the key. After five days it just stopped recognizing the fob entirely.
He thought the central electronic module was failing. That's not an unreasonable guess when the symptoms come and go like that. I told him not to start assuming module failure until we ruled out the key itself.
I met him in his driveway. When I read the key that had been programmed, the transponder data didn't match what that module generation expects to see. The first handshake the car makes when you insert the key is a quick check. The second, deeper handshake during startup is where the mismatch was catching. That's why it would start once or twice and then throw a fit. A wrong transponder can pass the surface read and fail the rolling code check shortly after.
I programmed a proper replacement fob, the factory FCC ID on his fob matches the five-button flip format he needed, and I put a fresh CR2032 in at the same time because the old battery had dropped enough that it was adding marginal signal issues on top of everything else. Ran the car through several start cycles while he watched.
He hadn't been towed, hadn't spent a day at the dealer. The job was done in his own driveway, same afternoon he called. Saved a good chunk compared to what Volvo of Santa Barbara would have asked for, and he didn't lose the car for three days.
The whole thing came down to the previous tech using the wrong transponder variant. On these Volvos, the immobilizer is not forgiving about that. Close is not the same as correct.
