Over near UCSB campus in Santa Barbara, a guy with a 2007 XC90 flagged me down through a referral. Another locksmith had cut and programmed a key for him the week before, and it was already acting up. Mornings it started fine. By evening, the engine would crank, the dash would flash "Start Prevented, Try Again," and fuel cut out. Textbook intermittent immobilizer rejection.
He was convinced his CEM was dying. I told him to hold that thought.
I pulled the existing fob apart on his tailgate. The locksmith had loaded the wrong transponder chip variant. Volvo's P2 immobilizer is picky. It runs a two-stage handshake between the chip and the CEM, and a close-but-wrong chip can pass the first challenge and choke on the second. That is exactly what was happening. Worked when the system was fresh, failed after heat soak or repeated cycling.
I read the CEM via VVDI2, confirmed the mismatch, and programmed a new LQNP2T-APU fob with the correct chip paired to his specific CEM data. His CR2032 was also half-dead, which was dragging down the RF side and making remote detection flaky on top of the transponder issue. Swapped that too.
Months later, still working. The whole difference between a key that lasts five days and one that lasts five years is the chip type loaded inside the fob.
