I got a call from a guy parked at a hotel near the Promenade in Westlake Village. He was visiting from out of town, had one key to his name, and it had stopped starting the car. Turned it, nothing. The engine just sat there. No crank, no start, security light on.

He had already called the Cadillac dealer. They told him he would need a tow, an appointment the next morning, and it would be a while before anyone could look at it. He was not thrilled.

I pulled up to the hotel lot that evening. The 2004 SRX is a known quantity to me. The transponder key communicates with the immobilizer on every start cycle. When that communication fails, the car reads it as an unauthorized key and kills the start. Could be a worn key that finally lost its signal. Could be the only key got damaged. In his case, the key had clearly taken some abuse, probably from a heavy keychain pulling on it in the ignition over the years.

I cut a new key blank to his vehicle and programmed the transponder on site using my OBD equipment. The whole job took about 40 minutes in the parking lot. He drove out the same night. No tow, no appointment, no overnight stay without a car.

The dealer comparison did not even come up until he was already pulling out of the lot. He mentioned it almost as an afterthought. He had saved a good chunk, but what he actually cared about was not being stranded.
