Got a call from a guy near California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. His 2004 Cadillac SRX was sitting in a parking area, engine wouldn't turn over, and the SECURITY telltale on the instrument cluster was lit solid. He'd already tried the 10-minute relearn three times. Key to ON, wait for SECURITY to go off, turn to OFF, repeat. Classic PK3+ reset procedure. But it never cleared.
He was already looking up tow trucks to get it to the nearest Cadillac dealer, which around here means a decent drive and then a wait. They told him over the phone it could be a couple days before they'd get to it.
I drove out that evening. Plugged into the OBD-II port and pulled the BCM data. His body control module, a Delphi unit on the 2004 SRX, was showing a B2960 code, which is "Security System Sensor Data Incorrect." The transponder pellet in the key blade had gone weak. Not dead, just inconsistent. It would read on one try and fail on the next, which is why the relearn kept stalling out.
Cut a new blade from the 5928823 blank in the van, programmed the PK3+ chip to the BCM through the diagnostic port, and tested it six times cold. Fired every time.
He stood there with his old key in one hand, new one in the other, turning them over like he was trying to spot the difference. There isn't one on the outside. The difference is in the chip and whether the car trusts it.
Whole thing took about 35 minutes. He skipped the tow, skipped the dealer wait, and drove home.
