2006 Cadillac SRX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my SRX to the dealer for a replacement key?

No. Dealers will often tell you to tow it in, especially on an all-keys-lost situation, because their setup is shop-based. Mobile locksmiths carry the same category of programming tools and come to the vehicle. The 2006 SRX is an OBD-programmable transponder key system - that work gets done at the car, in the lot, wherever you are. Towing adds cost and time before anyone has even touched the key. Skip it and call me instead.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

Bring a valid photo ID and proof of ownership - your registration or title works. I also verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker to confirm the vehicle specs before cutting anything. This is standard practice for any locksmith or dealer. Having that paperwork ready when I arrive keeps the job moving and avoids any delays on site.

Q: A hardware store made me a copy of my SRX key and now the car cranks but won't stay running. What happened?

That is the transponder doing exactly what it is supposed to do. A standard key-cutting machine at a hardware store duplicates the blade profile only. It cannot copy or program the transponder chip inside the key head. So the copy turns the ignition cylinder just fine mechanically, but the vehicle's security system does not see a recognized chip, and it cuts the engine. Some owners describe it as a brief start followed by an immediate stall.

Q: My 2006 SRX key turns in the ignition but sometimes nothing happens. Is this a key problem or something else?

Worth checking the ignition cylinder itself, not just the key. The 2006 SRX shares its ignition cylinder design with other GM vehicles of that era, and worn cylinders on these can be finicky - especially if the key has seen years of use and has a worn blade. A worn key blade can fail to fully engage the cylinder tumblers, which means the switch never reaches the run position even though it feels like it did.

2006 Cadillac SRX Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked near The Oaks Mall Area on a Tuesday when the call came in. A woman had her 2006 SRX in a lot off Thousand Oaks Boulevard and her only key had snapped at the bow - the plastic head broke away from the blade. The blade was still stuck in the door lock.

She assumed she needed a tow. Her husband had already called the dealer and was waiting on a callback.

I got there before the dealer called back. The broken blade came out of the lock cylinder without much trouble, and I had the right blank in the kit. Cut a new blade to match her vehicle, transferred the transponder chip from the broken key head into the new one, and connected to the OBD port to confirm the security system recognized it.

She turned the key and it fired on the first try.

Her husband called back from the dealer while I was packing up. The quote he got assumed a tow, a full day in the shop, and a wait on parts. She told him it was already handled. He didn't believe her at first.

The technology in these older GM transponder systems is well understood at this point. There is nothing mysterious about it. You just need someone who actually carries the tools and blanks for a 2006 Cadillac and shows up when they say they will.

Cadillac SRX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I am locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes, and that is exactly the kind of call I handle. Tell me where you are near The Oaks Mall Area in Thousand Oaks and I will come to you directly. The 2006 SRX uses a transponder key, which means the job involves both cutting a new blade and programming the chip on site.
