Got a call from a woman parked at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. Her 2006 SRX had one key left and it was getting rough in the ignition. She said she could feel it catching, and twice that week the steering column locked up funny when she pulled the key out.
That tracks. GM recalled a huge batch of ignition switches under NHTSA campaign 14V-047, and the first-gen SRX was added later under 14V-355. The lock cylinder wears down internally and the key can slip out of the RUN position while driving. Kills power steering, airbags, everything. Her car had the recall done years ago, but the key blade itself was chewed up from years of use on that old cylinder.
I set up on the hood, cut a fresh 5928823 blank on my Triton, and programmed the ID 48 chip through OBD using my Smart Pro connected to the SRX's BCM. The security relearn cycled through in about ten minutes. Turned the new key, engine fired on the first crank, SECURITY light off.
She held the old key next to the new one and just stared at how worn down the cuts had gotten. Said she never thought about a key wearing out like a brake pad. I told her it is basically the same idea, metal on metal, just slower.
She kept the old one as a backup in her purse. New key, done on site, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted her over the phone.
