2008 Cadillac SRX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a transponder key, and how does it work on the 2008 SRX?

The key blade cuts to your specific vehicle, same as any mechanical key. Embedded in the head of the key is a small chip that communicates with the immobilizer when you turn the ignition. If the chip isn't recognized, the car won't start, even with a perfectly cut blade. On the 2008 SRX, the remote functions are handled by a separate fob, not built into the key itself.

Q: My 2008 SRX is showing a key-not-detected warning. Where do I start?

First, check whether the warning is coming from the remote or the ignition. On the 2008 SRX, the transponder key and the remote fob are separate. If the car starts fine but the remote isn't responding, that's a fob issue, usually the battery. Replace it and test. If the car won't start and you're seeing a security-related warning on the dash, that's a different situation. The immobilizer didn't see a valid chip. Try the other key if you have one.

Q: Can I buy a replacement transponder key online and just have someone cut it, or does it need to be programmed too?

You can buy an uncut, unprogrammed key blank online, and plenty of people do. The blade still needs to be cut to your vehicle, either from a key code or by decoding the lock. But cutting alone won't make it start the car. The transponder chip in that blank has to be enrolled to your specific vehicle using diagnostic equipment. Until that step is done, the key is just metal as far as the immobilizer is concerned.

Q: I only have one key left for my 2008 SRX. Should I get a spare made before something goes wrong?

Yes, and the reason is practical: if you're down to one key and it fails or gets lost, you're in an all-keys-lost situation. That's a longer job than making a spare from a working key, and it costs more because the process is different when there's no valid key to reference. Making a spare while you still have a working key is the simpler version of the same job.

2008 Cadillac SRX Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy at a Cadillac meetup near Rancho Conejo flagged me down after getting burned by another locksmith. He'd found someone through a cheap Google ad, paid a lot more than he expected, and walked away with a key that only half worked. The remote functions were inconsistent, and he wasn't confident the job had been done right.

Before he'd even let me look at the car, he asked how he could verify I was licensed. I gave him my BSIS license number right there on the spot and told him to pull it up on the state website while we talked. He did. Then we got to work.

The 2008 SRX transponder key setup is well within what my equipment handles cleanly. I went through the full enrollment process on site, confirmed the key chip was reading properly, and tested the remote functions separately. Everything came back solid.

He paid exactly what I quoted him before I touched anything. The dealer had quoted him considerably more just to look at it, and the first locksmith had charged above that and left him with a half-finished job. Getting it done right the second time, in the parking lot, for less than either of those options, was the whole point.

Cadillac SRX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key broke off in the ignition. Can you get it out without wrecking the cylinder?▼

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard call for me. I carry the tools to pull a broken blade out of an ignition cylinder without damaging the wafers inside. Once the piece is out, I can cut a new key either by decoding the lock on site or by working from your vehicle's key code. The new key then gets the transponder chip enrolled so it'll start the car.
