A guy pulled into Downtown Ventura running late, and his fob had been acting up for a few days. He'd been ignoring the key-not-detected warning on the dash, figuring it was just a battery thing. By the time he called me, the car had locked itself up tight in a parking structure off Main Street and the fob wasn't being recognized at all.
He had already swapped the battery himself. That's usually the right first move, and I told him so. But it hadn't fixed anything, which meant we were past the easy answer.
I got there and popped the fob open. He'd put the new CR2032 in, but the positive contact clip was slightly bent outward and wasn't making solid contact with the cell. The kind of thing that reads as a dead fob when it's really just a bad connection. I straightened the clip, reseated the battery, and the fob woke right back up.
From there I walked every function: passive door unlock at each handle, the lock button, the panic, each of the five buttons in sequence, and drop-tested the range across the parking structure. Everything came back clean. No programming needed because the fob was already enrolled -- it had just stopped talking.
He mentioned the dealer had told him over the phone he'd need a full fob replacement and to bring it in. That would have meant a tow since the car wouldn't start, plus whatever they charge for the fob and the programming appointment. He saved a good chunk just by having someone come look at it on site first.
