2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to me in Goleta or Isla Vista?

Usually within 30 minutes of your call, depending on where I'm coming from. The tools, key blanks, and programming equipment are always on the truck. There's no waiting on a service bay or a parts order. You call, I come to you.

Q: Can I get a key made today, without towing the Trailblazer anywhere?

Yes. The whole job is done at your vehicle, wherever it's parked. I've heard from owners who were told by a dealer to tow their truck in and wait days for parts. That's not how this works on my end. I carry blanks and programming tools for these trucks. You don't need a tow, you don't need a service appointment, and you don't need to wait around a dealer for a callback. Same-day, on-site is the standard.

Q: My 2004 Trailblazer starts fine but the fob buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new remote?

Not necessarily. On these trucks, the ignition key and the remote are independent systems. If the truck starts, your transponder is fine. Dead or weak fob response is usually one of three things: the CR2032 is worn down, the battery contacts inside the fob have a little corrosion or a slight bend, or the fob itself lost its pairing. Start with a fresh CR2032 and check that it's seated flat against both contacts.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2004 Trailblazer. Can I program it myself?

There is an onboard programming sequence for the remote fob on these older GM trucks that some owners have had luck with, but it requires having a currently programmed key and following a specific door-lock and ignition cycle without error. One missed step and it doesn't take. If you want to try it, look up the GM remote programming procedure for this generation specifically, not a generic Chevy guide.

2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Isla Vista, an older couple called about their 2004 Trailblazer. They weren't in a panic, but they were getting close.

Their only key was getting flaky on the remote side, and they wanted a spare made before it went completely dead. The real problem wasn't the key. It was getting to a dealer. Neither of them was comfortable driving freeway stretches anymore, and the nearest Chevy dealer wasn't exactly a neighborhood errand.

I pulled up to their driveway that morning. The truck was sitting right there. I decoded the blade from the lock, cut a new key, and programmed the transponder through the OBD port. Then I paired a fresh fob to match the factory remote. Showed them how to check the CR2032 before it gets weak enough to cause confusion.

The whole thing was done before they would have finished the phone call with the dealer's service department. They had two working keys, both sides confirmed, and they never had to leave the property. The dealer had quoted them significantly more for a single key, plus the logistical problem of actually getting there. That part didn't come up much in conversation. They were just glad to have a spare in hand.

How long does a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer key replacement take?▼

Depends on what you're starting with. If you have at least one working key, adding a spare typically runs 20 to 30 minutes on-site. The transponder programming on these early-2000s GM trucks has a timed relearn cycle built into the security system, so there's no skipping that window, but it's not a long one. All-keys-lost takes longer. With no working key to reference, the security relearn cycle is mandatory and adds time to the job.
