2012 Dodge Journey
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know I won't get hit with a bait-and-switch price on my 2012 Journey?

This is the right question to ask any locksmith before they touch your car. The pattern on Dodge key jobs specifically is a low number over the phone, then a story about "extra fees for the programming" or "this model is different" once they're already on site and you're stuck. We quote the full job for your 2012 Journey when you call. That means the cut, the programming, and the service call, one number. It doesn't move when we arrive.

Q: Will the replacement fob work exactly like my original?

Yes. A properly programmed replacement fob for the 2012 Journey communicates with the vehicle security system the same way the factory fob does. The immobilizer recognizes it, the engine starts, and the remote functions work as expected. Before I leave any job I walk every button and confirm the vehicle is responding to the fob at the door, not just at the start button. You're not getting a "close enough" key.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2012 Journey. Can I just program it myself?

No, and this is a real money trap that Journey owners fall into. The 2012 Journey smart key system does not have an owner-accessible programming sequence. There's no ignition-turn trick, no button combo, no shortcut through the door lock. Registering a new fob requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port to run the security access procedure and enroll the new fob into the vehicle's system. The fob you bought online is just hardware until that happens.

Q: What happens if I've lost all the keys to my 2012 Journey and there's nothing to start with?

All-keys-lost is a standard job. It takes longer than adding a spare because the security system needs a full reset before new fobs can be enrolled, but it's done on site. I bring the replacement fob, connect to the OBD port, run the security reset sequence, register the new key, and get you driving. The previous keys, wherever they are, get erased from the system in the process, so they can't be used to start the vehicle.

2012 Dodge Journey Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Hollywood Beach parking lots have a particular energy in the afternoon. Salt air, sun bouncing off windshields, people dragging coolers to the sand. That's where I found the Journey.

The owner had parked it the night before without a problem. Came back the next morning and the fob just wasn't waking the car up. Doors wouldn't respond to the handle, the start button was showing a key-not-detected warning, and she was late for something. She'd already swapped the battery herself, which was the right instinct, but it didn't fix it.

I popped the fob open on the hood of my van while she watched. The new battery she'd put in was seated crooked, just enough that the contact wasn't making clean pressure. Straightened the clip, reseated the cell, snapped the fob back together.

That fixed about half the problem.

The other half was that the vehicle needed the fob re-registered. This happens sometimes after a complete power loss to the fob, and the CR2032 in hers had apparently gone fully dead before she swapped it. So I connected to the OBD port, ran the security access sequence, and re-paired the fob. The whole process took maybe 25 minutes once I had everything out.

By the time she got back from walking her dog down the beach path, the Journey was reading the fob at the door, starting clean, and every button was confirmed working. She mentioned the dealer had told her over the phone it would be a multi-day turnaround to even look at it. She didn't end up needing that appointment.

Dodge Journey Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Dodge vehicles in California?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz holds a California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services locksmith license and carries full liability insurance. On the Dodge Journey, the programming side of the job requires the right diagnostic equipment and access credentials to talk to the vehicle security system through the OBD port. Having the license isn't just paperwork. It's what gets us authorized access to the security data and procedures that a cut-rate guy with a generic key and no credentials can't reach.
