Out in Westlake Village, I got a call from a guy who was parked in a lot off Thousand Oaks Boulevard and could not get his 2020 Journey to acknowledge the fob at all. He had already done the obvious thing: new CR2032, seated it himself, tested it twice. The dash still showed a key-not-detected warning every time he approached. The doors would not unlock from the handle, and the start button was dead unless he held the fob right against it.
When I got there he was sitting on the curb with the fob apart in his hand, looking at it like it had personally wronged him.
I tested the fob output with my programmer before touching anything else. The fob was transmitting, but it was no longer paired to the vehicle. Somewhere in the process of swapping batteries, the stored pairing had not caused the issue directly, but checking the module confirmed the fob registration had gone stale. It happens on these.
I registered a fresh fob to the vehicle at the OBD port, cut the emergency insert blade to match his lock, and walked every button and every door before I called it done. Start button worked clean. Handle touch unlock worked on both sides. He asked if the old fob could be kept as a backup. I told him it could be registered too if he wanted a second key while I was already connected, which he did.
Two working keys, both tested, done in the parking lot. The dealer had quoted him an appointment four days out. Four days without a working key is not a solution.
