Q: How do I know you're not one of those bait-and-switch locksmiths?

Almost always the CR2032 is the culprit, but not always in the obvious way. Even a battery that reads okay on a cheap tester can be too weak to broadcast at full range. Swap it with a name-brand CR2032 and test from a normal distance. If range stays short after a fresh battery, the next suspect is the fob antenna board inside the housing.

Over in Five Points, a diesel mechanic on his lunch break called me from the parking lot of a muffler shop. His 2015 Dodge Journey had stopped responding to the fob that morning. Doors wouldn't unlock on approach, push-button start was showing a key-not-detected warning, and he was already late getting back to work.
