A guy from Hobson Park in Oxnard called me on a weeknight. He drove for a living and his 2013 Journey had stopped recognizing the fob entirely. The dash was showing a key-not-detected warning, the door handle touch sensors were dead, and the only way he could get in was by pulling the emergency blade out of the fob and using the door lock cylinder the old-fashioned way. Once inside, he had to hold the fob right up against the start button to get the engine to turn over. He'd already put in a fresh CR2032. It wasn't the battery.
I pulled up to his place and started at the fob. The new battery was seated fine, contacts looked clean. I ran a diagnostic and found the fob had been partially deregistered from the vehicle security system, probably from a low-voltage event. The vehicle still had one working key in memory but this fob had dropped out.
Reprogrammed the fob on site through the diagnostic port. Walked every door, confirmed touch unlock on both handles, checked all four buttons, verified start from normal pocket range without touching anything to the button. Took about forty minutes total.
He asked if the dealer could have done it faster. Maybe, I told him. But they weren't coming to his driveway in Hobson Park that night, and he had an early morning. That part he already knew.
