He called at 9:15 from the laundromat lot near Oxnard Skate Park. His 2014 Dodge Journey wouldn't start after his overnight janitorial shift ended. Push button did nothing. No dash response, no crank, no lights on the fob. He was alone in a dark lot and had to be at his next building by midnight.
Dealer was closed. A tow would just park the Journey somewhere until morning, and that doesn't help a guy working back-to-back shifts.
I got to the lot and connected to the OBD port. Pulled the WIN module data and the story came together fast. The vehicle battery had sagged low enough while it sat that the WIN lost its fob pairing. The fob itself was fine, the CR2032 was fine, but the module had simply forgotten the key existed during the voltage dip. The EVIC was blank because the system had nothing to talk to.
I charged the battery enough to stabilize the bus voltage, then reprogrammed his M3N-40821302 back into the WIN through OBD. The Journey started on the first press.
He sat there for a second, hands on the wheel, like he was making sure it was real. Then he just said "I can make my next building." That was it. No drama. He drove off and made his shift.
The fob was never the problem. A dying battery tricked the WIN module into forgetting it had a key at all. That kind of thing is why I don't assume the obvious answer on the phone.
