She was at a restaurant over in Carriage Square when someone grabbed her purse off the back of her chair. Car keys, house keys, wallet, phone. Gone. She borrowed the hostess's phone, called the police, then her husband, then me.
Her 2016 Ford Fiesta was sitting in the parking lot with zero keys. Her husband had already called the Ford dealer while she was doing the police report. The dealer said they could order the key, but it would take three to five business days, the car would need to be towed to the dealership, and they suggested rekeying the locks while it was there since the stolen key could still open the doors. It can still physically enter the lock, but the immobilizer won't allow the engine to start. The old key is dead to the car.
I got there that evening. I used my diagnostic equipment to access the security module, clear the existing key data, and program two new fobs. I decoded the door lock and cut the emergency blade that lives inside the fob. I tested every function, walked the doors, verified the start, and confirmed the stolen key was no longer recognized. She finished the police report around the same time I finished the second key.
She drove home that night. The dealer estimate, plus the tow, plus the wait, would have stretched into the next week and taken a significant chunk of money. She paid a fraction of that, had two working keys, and the stolen fob was already worthless before she left the lot.
The moment that stuck with me was when she tested the fob herself for the first time. She just stood there clicking it like she needed to be sure it was real.
