2017 Ford Fiesta
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to just adding a spare?

More, and not by a small amount. When you have a working key, adding a spare is a quicker job. The system already has a registered key to work from, and adding another one takes less time and fewer steps. All-keys-lost is a different situation. The vehicle security system has to be fully reset through the diagnostic port, and then at least two keys have to be programmed before the car will start.

Q: Are aftermarket fobs for the 2017 Fiesta worth buying?

Sometimes, but the fob being cheap upfront doesn't mean the job comes out cheaper. Aftermarket fobs vary in quality. Some pair without issue. Others won't register properly, or they pair but drop connection intermittently, or the button feel degrades after a few months. The bigger variable is frequency and protocol compatibility. Not every aftermarket unit sold online is actually built to spec for this exact model year.

Q: My 2017 Fiesta starts fine but the remote lock and unlock stopped working. Is the fob bad?

Not necessarily. The remote entry function and the ignition/start function operate on separate parts of the system. A fob can lose its ability to lock and unlock doors while still communicating well enough to allow the car to start, and the reverse is also true. First check: fresh CR2032 from a name brand, seated correctly with the contact plate flat against the battery. Second check: test the fob range.

Q: Can I program a second key for my 2017 Fiesta myself at home?

No. The 2017 Fiesta smart key system requires diagnostic equipment to register a new fob. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that works on this setup. If you bought a fob online expecting to pair it yourself, you'll still need a locksmith or dealer with the right tools to finish the job.

2017 Ford Fiesta Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Blackstock, Oxnard, a guy called me after his key fob stopped unlocking his 2017 Fiesta. He'd had it for a few weeks, just thought the battery was weak, swapped it himself, and then it stopped working entirely. When he tried to start the car the dash threw a key-not-detected warning and the engine wouldn't turn over.

He'd already called a dealer. They told him the fob was dead, quoted him a wait of a few days for a new one to be ordered, plus the programming fee on top of parts.

I pulled up to his driveway in Blackstock and opened the fob on his trunk lid where he could watch. The CR2032 he'd put in was seated fine, but the positive contact plate had a slight upward bow in it, probably from whoever pried it open before him. It wasn't making full contact. I straightened it, reseated the battery, and the fob lit right up on the first button press.

But since the car had already thrown a warning and he'd been trying to start it repeatedly with a fob it couldn't read, I walked through the full check. Lock, unlock, the third button, door handle behavior, and a clean start cycle. Everything came back.

He didn't need a new fob or a dealer visit. He needed someone to actually look at the thing. The dealer route would have taken days and cost him a chunk he didn't need to spend.

Ford Fiesta Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a key for my 2017 Fiesta?▼

Call a mobile locksmith first. Dealer pricing on a smart key replacement for this generation Fiesta includes the fob itself, programming labor, and sometimes a tow if the car won't start without a working key. That adds up fast. A mobile locksmith comes to your driveway in Blackstock or wherever the car is sitting, programs the fob on-site, and you're done in under an hour.
