1999 Infiniti Q45
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: The dealer told me to tow my Q45 in for a key replacement. Do I actually have to do that?

No. Dealers say that because it is their process, not because it is the only option. A mobile locksmith can come to the vehicle and handle the cut and transponder registration on site. The Q45 is not some exotic edge case that requires dealer-only tools. Towing adds cost and time on top of the key work itself. Skip it.

Q: What do I need to show to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, meaning your registration or title. I also pull the VIN off the dash plate or door jamb and verify it against your paperwork before anything gets cut or programmed. Same documentation a dealer requires, but I check it on site in a couple of minutes instead of making you stand at a parts counter. If the name on the registration matches the ID, we are good to go.

Q: I bought a replacement key blank online. Can you just program it for my 1999 Q45?

Depends on what you actually bought. The 1999 Q45 needs a key blank that contains the correct transponder chip inside the key head. A lot of the cheap blanks sold online are chip-free or contain the wrong chip type, and there is no way to tell by looking at the outside of the key. If the chip is absent or wrong, programming will fail and the car will crank without starting.

Q: My Q45 cranks fine but shuts off after two seconds. Could this be a transponder problem?

That pattern, cranks and immediately dies, is the classic sign the immobilizer did not recognize the key. On the 1999 Q45 the transponder chip in the key head has to communicate with the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder every single start. If that handshake fails, the vehicle security system cuts the engine almost instantly.

1999 Infiniti Q45 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was working a slow Tuesday evening in Pierpont when a call came in from a woman parked near the waterfront. She was visiting Ventura for a few days and had snapped the head off her only key getting it out of the ignition. The blade was fine. The key head with the transponder chip inside was cracked clean through.

She had already called the dealer. They told her to have the car towed in and they would order the key and have it ready sometime the following day.

I drove to her. The blade itself was still turnable so she had not lost access to the car, but the moment that chip housing cracks and the antenna loses clean contact with the chip, you are one cold start away from a no-start. She had gotten lucky on the drive to Pierpont.

I decoded the existing blade, cut a new one on site, transferred the chip work to a proper replacement key head, and registered the new key through the OBD port. The whole thing took under forty minutes in the parking lot while she watched the water.

She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted, skipped the tow, and had a working key before it got dark. The dealer's timeline would have cost her a full day of her trip.

Infiniti Q45 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I am locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me in Pierpont?▼

Yes, that is exactly the situation I handle. Call me and I come directly to wherever the Q45 is sitting in Pierpont or anywhere else in Ventura. I carry the key blanks and programming equipment for this vehicle in the van. You do not need a tow, you do not need a ride to a dealer, and you do not need to wait until morning. Lockout plus a new key cut and programmed on site, all in one stop.
